(W)holistic Healing

As was highlighted in the previous blog post on the benefits of Reiki, Tai Chi, and Qigong , science is actively studying mind-body techniques to determine their benefits. Twenty-five years ago, when I began practicing meditation, Tai Chi, and Qigong daily, I quickly learned that these were highly beneficial practices for me. Even as a teenager, it was intuitively obvious to me that meditation was a highly mind centric healing practice. At first, it held no appeal and seemed like a rather harsh form of self discipline. It wasn’t until I began doing Qigong and Tai Chi as part of what I initially perceived of as “physical wellness” from my perspective as a westerner. The healing power of the mind-body connection itself became evident very quickly.

After my very first Tai Chi class, I felt a profound sense of relaxation and wellness that I had never experienced before. Within a few short weeks I was practicing the few things I had already learned independently and enthusiastically for at least an hour per day. I could not wait to get home from school and do standing meditation, Qigong, and my Tai Chi form. By the time I got to college, I had relentlessly practiced: (1) a 20 form “Medical” Qigong form ; (2) the Twenty-Four form Yang Style Tai Chi form; (3) the 72 form Chen Style Tai Chi hand form; (4) a 72 form Chen Style short staff Tai Chi form; and (5) a 72 form Zao Bao long staff Tai Chi form. At the time, I simply could not enjoy learning Tai Chi enough. My Tai Chi teacher, himself cross trained in Yoga, Shiatsu, and Reiki said that I really didn’t need all of these , and that I would eventually settle on a much more maintainable set of forms. He was right and to this day, I’ve found that the Qigong and Twenty-Four form Yang Style have both more than adequately served me over the quarter century since that first class.

For a long time, my sense of well being increased so much that I began to think , as many Qigong practitioners do, that many wellness issues can simply be solved with enough Qigong and Tai Chi practice and reduced to essentially body wellness. During this time I was also very interested in what I could learn from deeper meditative states - which one performs without moving. My sitting and laying down meditation practice built an important groundwork for later in life and allowed me to experience remarkable spiritual states. Through these, I better contextualized my existence and improved the power of my concentration, and my well being. However, I still hungered for ever greater meaning and clarity.

It would be many years before I decided to look into newer spiritual disciplines to help me do just this. Even after multiple very successful careers, and successfully raising a wonderful family, I began to have a truly spiritual crisis. Was concentration and mastery over body and mind all there is? Were we really just supposed to make ourselves into the equivalent of human statues? The more successful I became, the emptier I felt inside. Something was wrong and I knew it but I also knew I couldn’t solve it alone. After some remarkable dreams, I decided to broaden the knowledge I’d picked up about reincarnation from studying eastern philosophy in college and I very quickly learned about the Michael Newton Institute and its work on past life regression. The healing I received during these sessions was transformative in terms of the clarity and purpose it gave. However, there was still a very big need that I discovered as well at the end of these sessions - the need for deeper energy healing of the body-mind.

Since I had been practicing Qigong for 25 years, I knew I couldn’t simply turn to what I already knew. I decided to put my ego aside and learn Reiki. It’s not common knowledge, but many Qigong practitioners can grow arrogant about their abilities with energy healing. What I learned is that Qigong provides healing through a very specific frequency. The Reiki channeled energy is from a very high frequency. To be more accurate and direct, it is from On High. The Reiki sessions I had helped me open my heart and stop trying to become a statute. When I experienced past life regression during Reiki sessions the experience was different as well. The higher frequency healing, coupled with recollection of past lives, coupled with the many other surprising and wonderful things that happen during Reiki have helped me to heal the feeling part of myself in a very profound way that does not pathologize any emotion or failing.

Once again, I decided to learn everything I could through hands on Reiki practice on myself and others. Over time, I learned to bring Reiki and Qigong together during healing sessions. During sessions, people frequently report intense joy and well being when they feel the energy transfer. The well being aside, it quickly becomes obvious to the person that we are conscious energy - which has been described to be by at least one person as “mind blowing.” That waking up moment is one of the experiences I want to give people because it creates momentum to seek further spiritual healing, awakening, and enlightenment. The session becomes an avalanche of healing.

After I had learned Reiki, I felt as if I couldn’t possibly ask for or find anything else. I was overwhelmed with gratitude and certainty once again. However, something convinced me to take a class on Mediumship. I don’t remember exactly what got me to do it, but things began to change remarkably once again. I very quickly saw how easily we can all do this during gallery readings of classmates. I also learned very quickly that many of us who were drawn to the discipline of Mediumship had unfinished business with at least one dearly departed person. Whereas I had always assumed these situations were not fixable, I learned that via Evidentiary Mediumship, it is possible to (1) realize you ARE talking to the soul of a departed person; and (2) that you can resolve unfinished business to heal through the limitless forgiveness and unconditional love from the spirit world. Whereas Reiki and Qigong deal with energetic disturbances resulting from a need for greater wellness (arguably some of this goes back to Karma) , Mediums help reconcile people to their dearly departed to provide closure.

It’s quite a tool belt that I’ve built up over time and it’s still growing. While it’s too early to talk about some of that, my life’s journey has taught me to remain open, humble, and to continue with lifelong learning. Well being, spiritual growth is a lifelong journey. The good news is that there always seems to be a higher plateau of wellness, enlightenment, bliss available to us while we’re here! We just have to keep growing and learning.
